GAA CLUB NOTES

Huge congratulations to the Senior team who dethroned Moycullen to take Frank Fox back to the parish!

Despite the surface carrying the effects of the rainfall from the previous days, it was a glorious day for football in Pearse Stadium on Sunday. Both teams started with intent, while they were efficient in possession, they took their scoring opportunities well. The highlight of the first half was a superb point from Gary Sice; after gathering possession on the left wing with his back to goal, he turned his man to go down the sideline and as the angle seemed to have become too narrow, he left fly off his left boot, judging the wind and power diligently. The kick had pin-point accuracy and just enough elevation to float over the bar as the Moycullen goalkeeper could only stretch out his arm in vein. The scoreline at the break was Corofin 0-07 Moycullen 0-06.

The second half saw both teams come out of the blocks sharply, but thanks to resolute defending from the Corofin players in all areas of the pitch, Moycullen did could not land many blows on the scoreboard. The first 15 minutes of the second half saw Corofin open up a 7-point lead, thanks largely to a well taken goal by Tony Gill. While Liam Silke was busy beating 3 Moycullen players from the 45 meter line, Micheál Lundy made a move out from the full-forward position and that opened a gap for Liam Silke to carry the ball into. A pop hand-pass from Liam to Tony Gill on the 20 meter line took 3 Moycullen defenders out of play and Tony rifled a shot into the back of the Moycullen net from the edge of the box.

The final quarter saw Moycullen mount a late rally but it was too late in the game to overcome such a deficit. The game finished Corofin 1-11 Moycullen 1-09.

Liam Silke collected his Man of the Match award just before Dylan McHugh accepted the Frank Fox Cup on behalf of Corofin and lifted it high to the enormous roar of the supporters looking on from the pitch.

On Saturday, Ballina Stephenites will play Fulham Irish in McHale park at 6:00pm. Corofin will play the winners of that game in the Connacht Semi-Final on the weekend of 18th/19th November at a Galway venue. Full details will be shared of the Semi-Final fixture once they have been confirmed.

On Sunday the U-19's play their North Board Final against Claregalway at 1:00pm in Tuam Stadium. Best of luck to all the players and management team. We are asking that our supporters come to Tuam Stadium to give the lads a boost in what looks to be a game of great football.
